The GHyCoP Training & Education Centre Hydrography TECH AWI, at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany, offers excellent facilities in hydrographic training and education.

Solid and regular hydrographic training is needed to develop knowledge and experience in applications related to hydrography up-to-date with latest technology.

Coastal states gain economical potential and juridical power due to the globalization in economy, the increasing relevance of the international laws, and the technical advances. Safe navigation, economical and ecological management of marine resources and an integrated coastal development require hydrographic work, e.g. sounding and charting the water depth, determination of currents, delimitation and publication of maritime boundaries.

Training and education at the GHyCoP Training and Education Centre Hydrography (TECH-AWI) includes among others the following training fields:

• Hydrographical measurement methods and systems
• Integration of hydrographic data in support of maritime decisions and policies
• Training and education with respect to the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)
• Port security (SOLAS), port monitoring and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM)

Training activities range from one-day-introduction and refresher courses to deep hydrography training on selected topics of several days duration and include high-tech curricula for operators and surveyors. Course schedules, topics, complexity, exercises and practical work are adapted to demands and needs of our trainees and customers.

Operator of the Training & Education Centre Hydrography is the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) Bremerhaven together with the German Hydrography Consultancy Pool w.V. (GHyCoP), supported by the Bremerhavener Gesellschaft für Investitionsförderung und Stadtentwicklung mbH (BIS).
